ABOUT THE NOVEL

In the 1970s a young woman goes to India to retrace the steps of Olivia, a distant relative who moved to India in the 1920s as the wife of a British administrator. As she reveals more of the scandal that surrounded Olivia, the young narrator herself begins to feel increasingly overwhelmed by India and all it has to offer.

Olivia, once married with Douglas, lived in India, because her husband worked for the British government there. But then she went away with an Indian prince, the Nawab, and Douglas married Tessie Crawford, sister of Beth Crawford. The narrator, grandchild of Douglas and Tessie, got some letters written by Olivia (to her sister Marcia -> lived in Britain). Therefore, in the 1970s, the narrator travels to India to find out more about Olivia and her story…
