The narrator’s life in India and friendship with Inder Lal (p. 49-52)

The young Englishwoman tells us about her daily life in India and the routine that has come to all those things: waking up with the temple bells, ging to the bazaar, buying what she needs for cooking, then working on Olivia’s letters and her journal. She often meets Inder Lal with whom she made friends. Then they talk about many things, e.g. about his wife Ritu: He tells, that she was very homesick during the first years of their marriage which was arranged by his mother. Although Ritu isn’t very intelligent Inder Lal’s mother chose Ritu as his wife because of her adequate family background and her bright color of the skin.
